Theorizing the Gay Frog

Abstract The gay frog has taken on a surprisingly prominent role in contemporary environmental culture. Primarily associated with American shock jock Alex Jones and the so-called alt-right, fears of frogs being turned by hormones water have nevertheless entered mainstream, while memes are shared online users from across political spectrum. This article offers genealogy frog, situating this recent moment longer history “sex panics” over animals described queer ecologists, context an ongoing backlash against feminism trans liberation. It argues that potency as alt-right symbol derives capacity to instantiate racialized sexualized anxieties about border crossings. By examining humor clips memes, shows how liberal mockery inadvertently mainstreamed far-right beliefs served consolidate notions victimhood. In spite this, it comic potential holds promise for ecologists seeking think differently sex nature.
